Comparing You Tube to Dailymotion, and my experiences as a user by conduction a search on each sit and compare your results?

You Tube is widely know and is a great mechanism for broadcasting yourself or something across the World Wide Web. I feel it would be very hard for competing sites that try to achieve the same goal as You Tube, such as Dailymotion, Veoh or Mestacafe.

I am going to compare You Tube with Dailymotion. Even though I had heard of the site Dailymotion I had never realized it worked along the same lines as you tube. I did a couple of searches and these were my findings, firstly I just searched for videos regarding a general statement “Boy Meets Girl” you tube came up with 28,100 videos related to the search and Dailymotion only came up with 83. It then searched a Famous racehorse “Moscow Flyer” You Tube found 157 relevant videos and Dailymotion came up with 0. And lastly I search videos relevant to the new movies in cinemas at the moment “Couples Retreat” You Tube came up with 2,120 videos where as Dailymotion only came up with 170 videos.

As you can see You Tube has a much bugger database than Dailymotion, and provides it user with much more of a verity of videos when a particular topic is searched. Both sites were easy to use and pretty self-explanitatory. But I don’t think I will be changing my first option when I go on to the Internet. I will still be using You Tube over any other search engine such as Dailymotion.

Are Virtual Worlds like second life a fad or a technology that will endure??

Before this class I can honestly say that I had never heard of second life. During the class I found it quite serial that there was such a thing and that you can make money through it. I’m still in two minds weather I agree with it or not.  I don’t think it is a fad and I feel that it will keep progressing, which was shown on an overhead during the class “Second Life and the Hype cycle” witch showed that second life is progressing up the slop of enlightment and will hopefully reach the plateau of productivity.

Since this particular class I have become intrigued by its existence. It amazing to think that student or person all around can experience the glorious works of art which lye in the realm of the Sistine Chapel. And that it is so life like I find it scary.  It is also amazing that meeting can be held through second life these meeting could include people from all around the world. It could be a great money saver for business people and governments by cutting out travel costs.

As I was interest in the future I asked a friend who is head of the marketing department in for Horse Racing Ireland, Tamarisk Doyle had she heard of it and what were her views on the subject, she said that they are in talks of maybe creating a virtual racecourse in second life such as maybe the Curagh or Leopardstown which will host race meeting ect… she said that their researchers have shown that in coming years it will be a great opportunity as an alternative money spinner.

With that even though I am a bit skeptical about the whole second life stance and I feel it may take a while till I would join the motion, but I feel in coming years everyone will be part of it, and I can easily see it outdoing social networking sites such as facebook and bebo.

Could the making of more use of Wikis help to support this module??

Firstly a wiki is a “website that allows collaborative editing of its content and structure by its users” (oxford dictionary)

Even though it did at first take me a while to get my head around the whole notion of the different types of wiki’s there are, but I feel in further years that Biki will become one of the driving forces in internet debate.

I think that this module could in some ways make better use of wiki support in further years in some sectors of the use of the wiki, It could have a link to a general wiki, to which we could ask questions about topics that were covered in class and people didn’t quite understand in regard to certain topics, such as for example say I though I understood what was been ask of me in class then I went home and fund the particular topic difficult but didn’t want to annoy the lecturer by e-mailing him and asking him about the same topic which had ha already had thought us, but with a wiki I could post my question and one of my fellow students could answer my problem, also if in further years if the module was to have a group assignments a wiki would be the best way in allocating the work and as everyone gets some of the assignment done it is ticked off on the wiki which will also help encourage the other students to do their part of the work  on time.

So as you can see I do feel that wiki’s are an excellent teaching recourses in aiding the students learning. Hear is a you tube link that is a really easy way of solving our academic problems or just to show how a wiki could help us find people who share the same interest as us.

What do I like or don’t like about my experience with using these tools? (social networking)

Over the past couple of years we have been hit with the social networking buzz. I really feel it has changed how people interact with each other I don’t know if it a good thing or a bad thing. For instance take facebook which is actually the only social network which I am registered to, instead of people sending out invites to a 21st birthday  people are now sending out facebook event invitations,  I also feel that is making us more and more reliable on the internet access and our  I-phones  ect…  You really have to wonder what did people really do when they didn’t have mobiles  and internet, young children today lives revolve around a computer and it games, and is it right that 6,7 amd 8 year old kids are becoming members of these social networking groups  and could be exposed to things they shouldn’t be at such a young age?? But these are only the down falls of  the social networks for me it has helped me come back in contact with friends from my childhood and primary school,  and I feel as I get older it is a way of checking in with old friends as we all leave college and head our separate ways in the big world. It is also a way of making many new friends.   Social networking has many positives and many negitaves  but it how the world is revolving.

How dose using RSS feeds help assist you as a student here at UCD?

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it. Since my now knowing what the little orange symbol that I keepet seeing popping up all over the place when I was surfing the web, It has helped me hugely in keeping up with the news topics that im am interested in. My netvibes account which I am starting to relies how it really could become part of my daily life by looking at the RSS feeds on it. As a student they can I have started to find it really helps me when I am trying to research a topic which I have an assignment for. For instiance the netvibes site last week when I was looking at SIPTU and their stirkes regarding the wage hikes, it gave me a link to all the newspaper articals on the topic, I really feel when I get more used to using RSS I wont be able to do any research without the as they are so helpful in organizing exactly what I want from the web and it finds it for me. I really don’t know how I have survived without them up till now.

my experience of creatinga blog and adding posts to it.

This was my first time to make a blog, I never relised untill this lecture how useful blogs are and how you can exchange information so easily and how people can express their views on a particular subject on a day to day basis. with the help of the work book I found it particulary easy to make the blog. But I feel if i hadent been assisted by the workbook I would of found it difficult. I had never heard of google analytics before this lecture and I feel it is a really good tool in helping you record the amount of views your blog gets. I feel that I would have proberly hav found it much harder to create this blog if it hadnt been for the workbook I most definitally probeally wouldnt have been able to make this blog, since making this blog it has made me much more interested in the blogs out their and I have  looking at some and see for example what peoples views are on the forth coming election this friday on the lisbon treaty. It has helped me who is someone who didnt really have a clue on what it was all about understand the pros and cons of what the outcome will be if we get a yes or a no vote.
